RIP Scott Kalitta
Two-time NHRA Top Fuel champion Scott Kalitta passed away Saturday after suffering horrific injuries at an NHRA Funny Car event in New Jersey on Saturday.
We've only recently been covering NHRA in the FDH media family and I can't say that I know a tremendous amount offhand about Mr. Kalitta's career, but he was a supremely accomplished driver, the 1994 and 1995 Top Fuel Division Champion and someone beloved by friends and family from the accounts I'm seeing now. Any event of this nature is a tremendous tragedy to the entire sport, Scott's friends and family and frankly, those who were traumatized by seeing the deadly crash before their very eyes at the track.
Here's a video with many triumphant moments from Scott's career. It seems to be a fitting tribute to the memories he left behind.
Our FDH drag racing correspondent Jeff Weber will be attending the next NHRA event, next weekend in Norwalk, OH. I was going to be getting some thoughts from him for our FDH readers even before this happened and now I'll especially be interested to talk to him about the mood at the track one week after this unthinkable occurrence. Drag racing fans are a resilient bunch and they do have to deal with tragedies of this sort, so I'll bet it'll be a sad-but-resolved feeling in the air the rest of this weekend in New Jersey and next week at Norwalk.
RIP Scott Kalitta, God Bless you and your family and friends.

Wholesome F1 fun with Nazi whores
Like father ... like son???
Formula One chief Max Mosley, son of famed Hitler sympathizer Oswald Mosley, was shown in a video obtained by one of Fleet Street's notorious tabloids to be somebody who enjoys taking part in S&M orgies with hookers garbed in full Nazi gear. Ooooookay. By the way, don't click that link if you've eaten recently as you may regurgitate -- trust me.
The part I love the best is that when he was done with some of the most demented sexual stuff you can ever imagine, he relaxed with a cup of tea. You can't keep the Brits from their sophisticated relaxation, I tell ya! Plus, one of the whores said afterward, "The girls have all had a good seeing-to!" Those British can describe anything in a dignified-sounding manner, can't they?
Oh, and here's the best part: he's overseeing a "crackdown on racism in Formula One." You can't make this stuff up.

Video Clips: Fun Timewasters
By Rick Morris
From time to time, we try to accommodate our Lounge content consumers who just want some fun, light entertainment. Hence this edition of our Video Clips series, entitled "Fun Timewasters."
These are simply some video clips that you can enjoy and consume in the form of good, mindless entertainment. On with the show!
Ted Ginn, human highlight reel:
A tribute to one of the world’s great sporting events, the Monte Carlo Grand Prix on the Formula One circuit. Check out the video to see some glimpses of the past and present on one of the most visually spectacular backdrops you’ll ever witness – oh, and there’s some bitchin’ crashes in there.
An infamous clip: Carl Monday, ace investigative reporter from my hometown, “exposing” a perv using a library computer to watch porn and shove his hand down his drawers with young kids nearby:
Redneck puppet ventriloquism:
Here’s the George Costanza real-life “Frogger” clip. Classic.
From the late, lamented SUNDAY NIGHT SUBMISSION (one of my all-time favorites) on SportsTalkCleveland.com – the name Krone Meltzer was made infamous to wrestling fans all over the world. Who is Krone Meltzer? Why, he’s an adorable young tyke who loves spewing opinions on pro wrestling. He knows it all: just ask him! Here’s some of his greatest hits:
NBC News is now making their videos available for embedding on blogs. The first one that we will feature is their tribute to William F. Buckley, Jr.
Here’s a goofy fun little cartoon from 1969: it’s the opening to the animated program “The Archies” with the toe-tapping ditty “Sugar, Sugar.”

Memo to open-wheel weasels: we don't care!
Speed TV is reporting that the long-awaited open-wheel merger is on, with details to be announced this week. This is in line with public speculation that we discussed here almost two weeks ago.
My thoughts are the same now that they were then. As a longtime fan, I'm bitter and I think it's a joke that Tony George and the greedheads who destroyed open-wheel racing think that their 12-years-too-late solution is going to solve anything. With Bourdais, Dario, Hornish, Jacques and Juan Pablo (among others) having bolted to NASCAR and F1, the new "unified" circuit will now be slightly less crappy and watered-down. Congratulations.
With most Champ Car races being dropped (due to inability to assimilate more than a few with the existing IRL schedule), the Cleveland race, one of the most distinctive on the schedule, looks to be a casualty (at least for the 2008 season). Nary a word about it either way on the Cleveland Plain Dealer website as of yet. There's a shock!

Alonso is the Belichick of Formula One
It's a bit under the radar in the States, but the sports world's biggest cheating scandal this week was not centering around the Greater Boston area. Fernando Alonso, the two-time defending F1 champion, was deeply involved in a shocking scandal that involved his McLaren team receiving confidential strategic information about the archrival Ferrari operation.
Alonso is the youngest two-time F1 champ in history and is chasing his amazing young teammate Lewis Hamilton for a third consecutive title. McLaren was fined $100 million for their involvement in the scandal and they were disqualified from the constructors' championship, which would have been theirs for the taking. This is a huge deal in a sport with rabid fans all over the globe.
It's disappointing that this matter has received such scant coverage in the U.S., since Formula One is the league with the most amount of money invested in it worldwide. With the chauvinism of the American sports public, and the fact that ESPN drives so much of the agenda about what matters (and they give short shrift to any organization that does not have a TV deal with it), it's sadly not surprising, though.
