It's THE ONE-YEAR ANNIVERSARY EDITION of THE FDH LOUNGE on SportsTalkNetwork.com this Sunday night from 8-11 PM EST! As you would expect from the program where "nothing is off-topic," we have a multiplicity of topics that The Dignitaries of The FDH Lounge will be addressing.
In Hour One, after the Opening Statements, we'll be hearing from our good friend Jake Digman, the right-hand man over at the North American Allied Fight Series and Pro Karate Weekly. He'll be discussing several matters with us, including the new NAAFS program coming to STN this Tuesday at 9 PM EST, the rise of MMA as a whole into a huge force in the sports business and what it is like to work with a promotion showcasing some of the hottest up-and-coming amateur and pro fighters. Next, we'll revisit the shocking ups and downs in presidential politics since our last program on December 30 and that will take us well into the second hour.
Then it's time to look back at a year of great FDH Lounge programming. Nobody's ever tried to put on a show as ambitious in scope as this one and we'll revisit topics we covered, as well as overall events between January 14, 2007 and now. This should be another one of our now-legendary free-for-all segments that could verge anywhere and everywhere.
Once we move past that, shortly into Hour Three, we'll be joined by one of our regular guests in The Lounge, dare we say someone verging on Honorary Dignitary status in Russ Cohen. He's the proprietor of Sportsology, a great website dedicated to the vast sports landscape, and he was in Buffalo for the great Winter Classic NHL outdoor game on New Year's Day. He'll tell us exactly what it was like to be there, how it compared to the first NHL outdoor game in Edmonton (which he also attended) a few years ago, what he hears about the future of such events, and much, much more.
We'll wrap up our three hours with The FDH Lounge Pigskin Report, as we take a final look back at the college bowl season, an early glance ahead to the NFL Draft and an examination of the ongoing NFL playoffs and the first Championship Sunday preview you'll find anywhere.
It's been an outstanding first year on The FDH Lounge as we established an ambitious mandate for ourselves creatively and took large steps towards fulfilling it. With this program, we'll celebrate what we've done and continue to demonstrate to you that we're your ultimate source for discussion on anything and everything going on today.

Watch outdoor NHL action today on NBC!

With the exception of FDH contributor Paul Teeple, I am certainly the biggest hockey promoter in the entire family that we have here. So it should have been no surprise that I have endlessly touted (much to the eye-rolling amusement of fellow FDH Lounge Dignitary Chris Galloway) on The FDH Lounge program the NHL Winter Classic, emanating today from Buffalo at 1 PM EST on NBC. 73,000 frozen spectators will be watching the contest between the hometown Buffalo Sabres and the Pittsburgh Penguins (booooo!) from Ralph Wilson Stadium.
Granted, there will be a lot of great college football bowl games on head-to-head with the game, so even I won't be able to watch every minute of the action. But whether you're a diehard fan of the game, a casual one, or just a sports fan with an open mind, at least tune in occasionally to watch a part of history and what promises to be some unforgettable television
Additionally, we advise you to read up on the game in two places:
^ NHL.com, which is the best and most comprehensive website operated by any of North America's major sports leagues.
^ Sportsology's hockey section: our good buddy Russ Cohen is one of the lucky folks in attendance today for this piece of history, and he's got an excellent preview article posted. He also attended the precursor for this game, the Heritage Classic in Edmonton in 2003, which featured an Edmonton-Montreal tilt from a football stadium under similar conditions. We are fortunate to have Russ appearing on our next FDH Lounge program to share his observations from this game, how it compared and contrasted to the scene in Edmonton, and what similar events could be coming to North American cities in the future.
Enjoy all of today's great college football action (including the Cotton Bowl, which I have already predicted will be the day's show-stealer), but leave some room on the plate for the NHL Winter Classic. You won't regret the time spent.

A look at the future of hockey

Media coverage is always unforgivably scarce in the United States when it comes to the world junior hockey championships. There is no television presence to speak of, at least in terms of easy availability, and the overall presence in the American consciousness is zero.
But for hockey fans interested in taking a look at the future of their sport, there are resources, one of which is the site run by our good friend Russ Cohen, Sportsology. Russ has added a really good preview of the event and his excellent coverage of hockey overall indicates that this site will continue to be a good place to check as this important annual event approaches and gets underway.

Sorry Larry Dolan, facts are facts

The success of the Cleveland Indians in 2007 has obscured, in the minds of many, the fact that the organization has put greater emphasis on its bottom line than winning on the field. Fans have waited in vain for the team to make it somewhere into the middle of the bell curve since Mark Shapiro and Company instituted the payroll slash-and-burn in 2002.
We always make mention on FDH programming of the fact that analysts can speak with the most knowledge about situations closest to home. Therefore, I can speak with more authority on Cleveland sports than on any other market because I have observed it up-close my entire life. Nevertheless, it's always nice to be reinforced by something noticed by an observer of the national scene. Such was the case with this column by our friend Russ Cohen of Sportsology. As he notes, the correlation between payroll and World Series titles is undeniably strong. The Tribe obviously has a strong core in place, but as previously noted here, it wasn't nearly strong enough to beat Boston minus a strong overachieving scenario. A few impact moves are still necessary to give this team a legitimate chance at a world championship. The Dolans must change their policy and give the go-ahead for at least a mid-level payroll in order to maintain credibility with non-homers moving into 2008.
